Dry blasting, also known as abrasive blasting, grit blasting or spindle blasting, is a surface pre-treatment that removes rust and surface contaminants from a metal component prior to powder coating or adding another protective coating. It can also be an attractive decorative finish on its own. As a mechanical pre-treatment, abrasive blasting is an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical pre-treatments, as it does not generate chemical waste. Abrasive blasting is also an important part of the protective coating process, as it ensures metal products are pure and free of contamination that may lead to degrading later on.
Types of dry blasting include sandblasting, bead blasting, garnet blasting, shot blasting and aluminium oxide blasting . Different abrasive blasting processes vary in how aggressively they treate the metal components, resulting in different finish textures.

DECO usually blasts smaller components. However, we can blast products up to 5m long.
Gloss level and surface texture depend on the specific dry blasting process used. Textures can range from rough to smooth. Using smaller beads in bead blasting, for example, can result in smoother textures, while larger beads create a rougher finish.
Subject to the specific abrasive used, usually very little of the original metal is removed, just enough to remove rust particles and other contaminants.
DECO recommend this process for thicker metal components, as the blasting process can distort thinner metals.
The peening action of the blasting process can increase the hardness of some metals.
While the finish itself is not corrosion resistant, the dry blasting process removes surface contaminants from the metal, reducing its risk of corrosion.
