Aluminium Decking vs Composite Decking – What are the key differences?

In architecture and construction, materials shape not only the aesthetics but also the sustainability and longevity of our buildings. When it comes to decking materials, timber composite and aluminium decking products are two of the most common timber-alternative options.

Aluminium Decking: The Modern Marvel

Known for its strength, durability and corrosion resistance properties, aluminium makes a fantastic decking material. Aluminium decking systems DecoDeck is made from 100% non-combustible lower-carbon aluminium and is coated with a choice of 15+ Super Durable DecoWood® powder coat finishes, which offers a natural timber look without the ongoing maintenance.

Aluminium is extremely resistant to harsh weather conditions and will not rust, warp or crack under intense sunlight or in damp or wet conditions – meaning it is perfect for Australia’s harsh environment. The long, straight boards are lightweight, yet strong, meaning installation only require 600mm centres (other materials typically require 400mm centres) and systems like DecoDeck® can be butt joined, with accessories allowing for butt joins between joists to improve material utilisation.

And contrary to popular belief, aluminium will stay cooler under direct sunlight than other timber or composite products thanks to its ability to disperse heat quickly and only heat to ambient temperatures. This becomes a significant advantage in hotter climates.

Aluminium decking allows you to be confident that you’ll save time and cost by avoiding ongoing staining and painting, and will ensure you’ll have a fantastic looking deck for a long time to come.

Composite Decking: A Blend of Materials

Composite decking has become increasingly popular over the last few years, with several imported and locally made options now available in Australia. Composite products are generally an affordable option made from a blend of materials inlcuding wood fibres, glues and plastic, which creates a product that mimics the look of timber with some improved durability.

Available in a range of colours and timber-look designs, Composite Decking products can differ in quality when it comes to the likeness of real timber. Also, due to the makeup of the boards, the timber finish can also be less authentic.

When it comes to heat, Composite Decking can reach over 23°C higher than the ambient temperature accorcing to leading composite decking manufacutrers. That means when the weather outside is 26°C, the deck can reach 65°C if in full sun. This is a key consideration depending on where your deck is situated.

Choosing the perfect decking material

When it comes to choosing the perfect material for your outdoor deck, there are a range of factors to consider – durability, strength, combustibility, sustainable, design and maintenance.  Making an informed decision requires a close look at what each decking material offers, and what is best suited to your lifestyle.
