Beautifully designed by Michelle Viret, this 1980s transformation in Yarrawarrah, New South Wales draws inspiration from Mid-Century Modern design and inspiring locations from around the world. Emphasising light and open living spaces that draw the outside in, this stunning residence embodies the tranquil lifestyle of residing along a beautiful nature corridor.

What product features do you consider necessities when designing a home?

"Firstly, the product must be fit-for-purpose. Is the home in a coastal environment or at risk of bushfires? How will the product function in that environment? We also consider durability. It is always important that products stand the test of time. We lean towards selections that are natural or mimic nature as this brings warmth, tactility and comfort into the home. We design environmentally conscious projects focusing on products with eco-friendly material properties, sustainable manufacturing techniques and minimal transportation requirements", said Michelle Viret.

Clean, horizontal lines and timber accents are key design elements for Mid Century Modern inspired homes. Timber-look aluminium battens by DecoBatten were used to create a modern yet tranquil outdoor space that accentuates the home's characteristics and blends seamlessly with the surrounding bushland.

"The Terrace was originally open to the existing car port. The DecoBatten screen was designed to provide privacy from the street and the neighbours, whilst adding a layer of warmth to the outdoor space. The DecoWood® Spotted Gum finish was selected as the colour blended beautifully with the warmth of the European oak furniture used throughout allowing the internal and external spaces to flow effortlessly together".

The Yarrawarrah Residence is located near many pockets of bushlands and a National Park. It was clear from the beginning that the home is open to the elements, as well as being prone to bushfires. When it came to selecting products for the exterior of the home, materials had to be bushfire safe and non-combustible to pass the BAL rating requirements.

"Timber was not an option due to the bushfire rating requirements imposed by the sites zoning conditions. As such, an aluminium product was selected as it isn't flammable and had little to no maintenance long term. This suited our baby-boomer clients perfectly as they move into retirement. More time to enjoy a mojito on the deck!" Said Michelle.

DecoBatten is 100% solid aluminium and certified non-combustible, making it bushfire safe and the ideal timber alternative for those living on bushy land. To order a sample of DecoBatten, please click here.
