Thermoplastic Coating Processes

DECO offers three different coating processes for the application of thermoplastic coatings. The process used for your product will depend on size specifications and the type of plastic used in the protective coating. Before being coated in any of the following processes, the metal components must be pretreated using either a chemical process, special primers or abrasive blasting.

Electrostatic Application

  • As with standard powder coating, the part is racked before spraying
  • The part is earthed
  • The plastic particles are applied through an electrostatic spray gun , which imparts them with an electric current, causing them to be electrostatically attracted to the part
  • The dry film on the part is then heated to melt and flow

Spraying

  • The part is preheated
  • The plastic powder is then sprayed on
  • The heat of the part melts the powder and allows it to stick to the surface of the metal

Fluidised Bed Application

  • The part is preheated
  • The part is then immersed in a bath of air-fluidised plastic powder
  • The heat from the metal part melts the plastic powder, allowing it to coat the surface of the metal

Plascoat PPA 571

DECO offers Plascoat PPA 571 as a thermoplastic coating option. This powder is a performance polymer alloy coating specially designed to provide a tough and long-lasting coating for galvanised steel mild steel and aluminium. It is halogen free and has a low toxicity index, as it produces low levels of smoky combustion fumes when burnt.

This type of thermoplastic coating is excellent for exterior applications such as fencing, as it performs well against salt spray, extreme weather conditions, graffiti and airborne pollutants. It is also impact resistant and does not crack under stress.
